A total of at least 12 of these medium-lift transport aircrafts are expected to be inducted into service with the Indian Air Force [IAF] - 6 have been delivered, so far.
They are expected to specifically serve as platform for the deployment of Special Forces operatives, when the need arises, owing to their ability to perform short take-offs & landings from rough, unpaved surfaces, that may have to be used as runways. After India placed an initial order for 6 of these aircrafts in 2008, a follow-on order for 6 more were placed in 2011.
